Full Day Salmon Fishing Charter

Picture this: you're out on the water at sunrise, coffee steaming in your cup, watching the mist rise off the Columbia River as we head toward some of the most productive salmon waters in the Pacific Northwest. This isn't just another fishing trip – it's an 8-hour adventure that takes you from the mighty Columbia through the Willamette River and out to the Pacific Ocean, chasing the best salmon action Oregon has to offer. Whether you've been fishing these waters for decades or you're just getting started, this charter is designed to put fish in the boat and smiles on faces.

What to Expect on the Water

We launch at 6:00 AM sharp – trust me, those early morning hours are pure gold when it comes to salmon fishing. The beauty of this full-day charter is that we're not locked into one spot. We follow the fish, moving between the Columbia River's famous salmon highways, the productive backwaters of the Willamette, and when conditions are right, we'll head out to the Pacific where the real giants are waiting. This top-rated charter accommodates up to four anglers at the base rate, though we can squeeze in six if your group needs the extra space. Every piece of gear you need is included – premium rods, reels, tackle, and bait. All you need to bring is your Oregon fishing license, some snacks, and the enthusiasm to land some world-class salmon. The boat is equipped with all the safety gear and electronics needed to find fish and keep everyone comfortable throughout the day.

Techniques & Tactics

We fish smart out here, adapting our approach based on what the salmon are doing and where they're holding. In the Columbia, we'll often troll with diving plugs and spinners, working the deeper channels where chinook love to cruise. When we hit the Willamette, we might switch to drift fishing with cured eggs or switch up to lighter tackle for the more finicky coho. Out in the ocean, it's all about reading the water – finding the bait balls, working the temperature breaks, and putting our offerings right in the strike zone. I've got all the latest fish finders and GPS technology to keep us on the productive water, but there's still an art to reading the currents, understanding the tides, and knowing exactly where these fish like to hang out during different parts of the season. The gear we use is tournament-grade stuff – nothing cheap or unreliable. When you hook into a 30-pound chinook, you want equipment that can handle the fight.

Species You'll Want to Hook

Chinook salmon are the undisputed kings of these waters, and for good reason. These powerhouse fish can easily hit 20-30 pounds, with some monsters pushing 40 pounds or more. Peak season runs from late spring through early fall, and when you hook into one of these bruisers, you'll understand why they're called "kings." They fight hard, run deep, and test every bit of your skill and equipment. The meat is rich, oily, and perfect for grilling or smoking.

Coho salmon bring a different kind of excitement to the table. These silver bullets are pure energy, known for their acrobatic jumps and lightning-fast runs. They typically range from 8-15 pounds and are most active during the summer months. Coho are aggressive feeders and will often hit lures with authority that'll surprise you. Their flesh is lighter than chinook but incredibly flavorful – a customer favorite for sure.

Sockeye salmon are the prize for their incredible table fare. These fish are renowned for their deep red meat and rich flavor that's unmatched in the salmon world. They're typically smaller than chinook, averaging 5-10 pounds, but what they lack in size they make up for in fight and flavor. Sockeye runs are seasonal and can be unpredictable, making them a special treat when we encounter them.

Pink salmon might be the smallest of the Pacific salmon, but they make up for it in numbers and enthusiasm. During odd-numbered years, these scrappy fighters flood the rivers in massive runs. They're perfect for beginners and kids – they bite readily, fight hard for their size, and are excellent eating when fresh. Don't let anyone tell you pinks aren't worth targeting.

White sturgeon add an entirely different dimension to this charter. These prehistoric giants can live over 100 years and grow to massive proportions. Landing a 6-8 foot sturgeon is a battle you'll never forget – they're pure muscle and determination. We practice catch and release with most sturgeon to preserve these ancient fish for future generations. When you see one of these dinosaurs surface next to the boat, it's a moment that stays with you forever.

Time to Book Your Spot

Oregon's salmon runs are world-class, but they're also seasonal and weather-dependent. This charter gives you the best shot at multiple species across diverse waters that most guides can only dream of accessing in a single trip. With all gear included and a boat that's equipped for both river and ocean fishing, you're getting exceptional value for a full day on the water. Remember, we need 72 hours notice for cancellations, so plan accordingly. These trips book up fast during peak season, especially when the salmon runs are hot. Whether you're looking to introduce someone to the sport or you're a seasoned angler wanting to explore new waters, this charter delivers the kind of fishing memories that last a lifetime. The combination of multiple river systems and ocean access means we can adapt to conditions and follow the best bite, giving you more opportunities to land that fish of a lifetime.

Chinook Salmon

Chinook are the kings of salmon for good reason - they're the biggest and strongest fighters you'll encounter. These bruisers typically run 15-30 pounds but can hit 40-plus in our waters. They're silver with blue-green backs and have black spots on their heads, backs, and all fins, plus distinctive black mouths and gums. Kings like to stay deep and are light-sensitive, so they hug the bottom during daylight hours. Best fishing is early morning or evening from spring through fall. What guests love is the raw power - a big chinook will test every bit of your tackle and skill. The rich, oily meat is top-shelf eating. These fish can live 7 years and travel thousands of miles during their lifecycle. Since they stay deep, use weighted baits and fish the bottom structure along the Columbia's deeper holes. Pro tip: don't horse them - let your drag do the work and be patient. A big king will make several powerful runs before giving up.

Chinook Salmon

Coho Salmon

Coho salmon, also called silvers, are hands-down the most acrobatic fish we target. These 8-12 pound fighters are known for jumping clean out of the water multiple times during a fight - some can leap 6 feet high. They're silver-sided with dark blue-green backs and have black spots only on their backs and upper tail fin. You'll find them in the Columbia and Willamette from late summer through fall, often holding in calmer water under debris or structure. What makes coho special is their fighting spirit and excellent table fare with that bright orange-red meat. They can live up to 5 years and develop hooked jaws during spawning. Early morning and evening tend to be best for action. Here's a solid tip: in fast water, swing bright spinners through the runs. In holding water, try twitching jigs with long tails - chartreuse and pink are go-to colors that really trigger strikes.

Coho Salmon

Pink Salmon

Pink salmon are the smallest of the Pacific salmon but what they lack in size they make up for in numbers and fun. Also called humpies for the distinctive hump males develop, they typically weigh 4-5 pounds and run about 20-24 inches. These fish love cold water and show up in odd-numbered years during late summer runs. You'll find them in the lower Columbia and coastal rivers. Pinks are perfect for beginners - they're eager biters and not too difficult to land. The meat is lighter and milder than other salmon, great for smoking or grilling. They have large black spots on their backs and tails, which helps tell them apart from coho. Since they feed heavily on crustaceans, their flesh gets that nice pink color. Here's what works: bright pink jigs or hoochies work best. Add some herring scent to really get their attention when the bite is slow.

Pink Salmon

Sockeye Salmon

Sockeye are the prettiest salmon you'll catch here in Oregon - bright silver with blue-green backs when fresh from the ocean, turning that famous red color as they head upstream to spawn. They typically run 4-15 pounds and 18-32 inches. You'll find them moving through the Columbia and Willamette from May through September during their spawning runs. What makes sockeye special is their rich, deep red meat - some of the best eating salmon around with that firm texture and bold flavor. They're strong fighters too, though not as acrobatic as coho. These fish have no spots on their fins, which helps with identification. Here's a tip: when they're running upriver, use smaller lures and keep them right at mouth level since sockeye swim close to the bottom with their mouths opening and closing.

Sockeye Salmon

White Sturgeon

White sturgeon are the giants of our rivers - North America's largest freshwater fish that can live over 100 years. These prehistoric-looking fish average 4-6 feet but can reach massive sizes, with the record being over 12 feet. They spend most of their time in deeper holes along the Columbia, feeding on the bottom with their sucker mouths. Spring through early summer is prime time when they move upriver to spawn. What guests love about sturgeon fishing is the sheer power - even smaller ones will test your tackle. They're also great eating with firm, white meat. These fish have cartilage instead of bones and rows of bony plates called scutes instead of scales. Pro tip: sturgeon bite very gently at first, so when you feel that light tap, stay calm and keep steady pressure until you get a solid hookset. They'll drop the bait if they feel resistance too early.
